The Fall River Law Office has been in business since June, 1996. Lawyer Barbara MacLellan, or Barb as she prefers to be addressed, admits she can't believe how time has gone by so quickly since she decided to open her own practice. In fact, she has been kept so busy, she didn't have the opportunity to celebrate the practice's 10th anniversary in 2006!
Barb was called to the Bar in October, 1993. She articled with Miller & Associates in Sackville, and later transferred to their Fall River branch office. That was when Barb, originally from Cape Breton, discovered Fall River. "When I came to Fall River to work, I immediately fell in love with the place. I knew I had found 'my own little Cape Breton'", she said. "It was definitely my cup of tea and I loved the area so much that I bought a home here in 1997."
When Barb set up her practice, she did not begin alone. She originally had a partner, Patricia Millar, when opening Fall River Law Office as well as an associate, Christine Driscoll. "And of course, I had my very loyal and supportive legal secretary, Carol Grandy. We opened the doors in June of 1996 and we did okay," she said pleasantly. "But after a couple of years, Christine went on to become a Crown Attorney, and then it was just Pat and I practicing." Pat left in 1998 to pursue other endeavors. "I don't know if I'd be here without her, though. Pat was instrumental in pushing me/us to open our own practice. I will always be grateful to her in that regard."
Carol stayed on with Barb and the two moved to a smaller space in the Fall River Place building and Barb continued to grow her practice. Carol decided to move on to an excellent job opportunity with the President of the Nova Scotia Community College and Barb wished her all the success in the world. But before leaving Fall River Law Office, Carol helped Barb find someone to replace her. Lori Smith, who is the Property Paralegal, joined Fall River Law Office in May of 2000 and "Lori was everything for a number of years, property assistant, receptionist, bookkeeper, she really did it all and I can't thank her enough for her loyalty over the years to me. Lori came on when I was in the tiny little space down the hall, next to the dental office," said Barb with a laugh. "Space was tight and when the opportunity presented itself, we moved to our current location in the building. It was just the two of us for a number of years, and with my practice growing I needed to hire another assistant/receptionist." Barb was pleased to add Bev Purdy as their Receptionist/Assistant, and shortly thereafter Chiarina Burke joined the staff, as their Matrimonial/Legal Assistant.
The Fall River Law Office has experience in a number of areas of law, including real estate, wills, probate and estate work, as well as matrimonial and family law. The practice also deals with small corporate business matters, as well as disability and insurance claims.
The Fall River Law Office is located above the Fall River Pharmacy, at 3060 Highway 2, Fall River. The office has been in the same building since 1996, but it has moved three times within that location. The most recent changes in February of 2007 came by way of expansion as the business acquired space formerly occupied by Outward Reflections Hair Design.
The lawyers and staff at Fall River Law Office strive to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, while at the same time providing their clients with great service. Barb is proud to be called a "small" law firm--where everyone is on a first name's basis and a friendly smile is sure to greet you when you enter her office.
The location of the Fall River Law Office means there is plenty of free parking, and it is easily accessible from the major highways. "People tell me that the location is convenient." said Barb. "It's easy to get to, is wheelchair accessible, and my office is located within the same complex as other professional services used by most residents in the Fall River and surrounding areas."
Barb is grateful for the tremendous support she has received from the community. "I appreciate the loyalty," she said sincerely. "It means a lot."
